Officer Ralph Miller - 1951-1976

At about 11:30 p.m. on October 2, 1976, Officer Ralph Miller responded to 119 Hall Street to check a report of a loud party. Cleo Roy, age 15, was armed with a rifle and was standing silhouetted in the doorway as Officer Miller approached the residence. Roy raised the rifle and fired a shot, striking Officer Miller in the upper chest. Officer Miller died later that night at the Catholic Medical Center - East. At the time of his death, Officer Miller was 25 years old and had served as a Manchester Police Officer for one year.

Bringing Cops & Kids Together

The Manchester Police Athletic League (MPAL) is an after school athletic organization that connects cops and kids. MPAL is a 501(c)3 non-profit that is run by a Manchester Police Officer assigned full time to the organization. Athletics include Boxing, Judo, wrestling and aikido. MPAL also offers numerous recreational and academic programs including Police Exploring and tutoring services. The goals of the organization are to provide youth with a safe, positive environment where police officers serve as coaches and mentors. MPAL also relies on a group of dedicated volunteers to provide expert coaching and development opportunities for participants. All athletics and activities are 100% free of charge, making programs accessible to all youth who want to participate.

The Manchester Police Athletic League strives to foster and maintain positive relationships between the youth of the Greater Manchester area and members of the Manchester Police department. MPAL offers area youth a safe structured environment to help kids grow, make the right choices and become productive members of the community. By providing mentoring along with sports and academic instruction in the after school/early evening hours, we believe we are making champions both in and out of the gym.
